This piece was originally and generously offered by Michael to be used as a forward for the 2021 re-publication of Leila’s autobiography Flickerbook. Michael wrote it while in recovery from Covid-19. In June 2021, Flickerbook was republished by CB Editions, with a new introduction by Ruth Fainlight, and an afterword by Hilary Mantel.
